Sessions v2 brings durable browser workspaces
Indexer 1.1.0 will turn Sessions into live browser workspaces with temporary URLs, saved working context, and safe pause and resume across the web app and extensions.
Sessions v2 — Dynamic Sessions — is being prepared for Indexer 1.1.0 on the web app and the Chrome and Firefox extensions.
Bookmarks organize what you keep. Sessions organize what you’re doing.
What this release will bring
- Durable Sessions that live independently of browser tab groups.
- Save an existing native browser tab group as a Session without reopening its tabs, with existing bookmark matches, temporary URLs, and offline-safe account sync.
- A workspace that can contain both permanent bookmarks and temporary, Session-only URLs.
- Automatic updates when you add tabs to a Session group, move them out, reorder them, navigate, or change the group's name or color.
- Saved working URLs: navigate deeper from a bookmarked page and resume where you left off while the original bookmark stays unchanged.
- Safe closure: closing a tab keeps its saved item; moving a tab out of the group removes it from the Session. Closing the group keeps the Session available to reopen.
- Pause and resume that preserve your working context across browser restarts. Opening an already-active Session focuses its existing group.
- A dedicated Sessions destination on the web and Bookmarks/Sessions navigation in the extension, with item details and counts of currently open tabs.
- Current, recently used, saved, and archived workspaces, with quick Focus/Pause/Resume controls and in-extension name/color management. Archiving keeps browser tabs and bookmarks untouched and can be reversed with Restore.
- A Save as Bookmark action for temporary URLs that keeps the Session item in the same position.
- Save selected Session links as bookmarks with per-link paths, optional Librarian suggestions, existing-bookmark attachment, explicit archived restoration, and safe retry after partial failures.
- A lightweight Session picker: configurable Alt+Shift+S shortcut, all saved Sessions with recents first, name search, keyboard Open/Focus, and Pause for active groups. Short extension copy links to a Sessions FAQ, and the web Sessions page scrolls for larger libraries.
- Local saves first, followed by debounced account sync with retries for interrupted connections.
- Cross-device handoff: pause and sync in one browser, then Resume Here in another, with pending/offline status and fresh account definitions. Browser bindings stay local and remote tabs are never controlled.
Why it matters
A bookmark library holds links you want to keep. A Session holds the pages you need for the work in front of you: research, dashboards, documents, reference material, and temporary discoveries.
Dynamic Sessions lets the browser group become a live editor for that workspace. You can work naturally in the browser, pause when you are done for now, and return to the same context later.
Adding a tab to a Session will never automatically create a bookmark. Session navigation will never edit the permanent bookmark's URL, folder, or tags.
Release scope
Sessions remains an Indexer Pro feature. Version 1.1.0 targets the web app and the current Chrome/Firefox extension builds; browser integration requires native tab-group support.
This MVP allows one active instance of a Session per browser profile. Sessions can sync between devices, but realtime coordination between simultaneously active browsers, shared Sessions, and version history are outside this release.
All six Sessions phases, including the quick switcher and cross-device handoff, are implemented and locally verified. Handoff uses last-successful-write conflict handling, not realtime collaboration; remote activity badges are deferred. The actual OS shortcut and physical-device handoff still need installed-browser smoke tests. Release-environment migrations, deployment, and store publication are still pending, so this entry remains in progress until the release is live.
